Chairman’s Report 2016

Despite being born in Leamington I was brought up in a Welsh home, living with my two Welsh grandparents and my Welsh Dad. Mum was English (but we forgave her and ironically she had the best singing voice!) It will not surprise you therefore that I took great interest in Wales’ progress in the Euros. To say they surpassed all expectations to achieve more than any Welsh side before them is an understatement. How did they do it?

Firstly, they had a terrific team spirit. Many commentators likened it to a club spirit which saw them fight for each other. Secondly, they had a tactically shrewd manager bolstered by a superb coaching team. Thirdly, they had wonderful and vocal supporters who acted as “ an extra player “. However, most importantly they had the right ethos.

We definitely have that same club spirit. We see it every week in coaching sessions, it was a joy to behold in our Summer League and we witness it when we watch our League teams. It could be argued that as an individual sport we are not the same as footballers but we can draw upon our club mates to improve what we do. We can watch them and imitate their skills, we can practise with them, we can take their advice, especially in League matches and, perhaps most importantly, we can encourage each other.

I believe we have a coaching structure to be proud of, one that has consistently led to the improvement in our club. It has produced very talented players, delivers a strength in depth and is perfectly placed to develop newcomers.
We have tremendous supporters, many of them parents but also our adult and junior players, who give their non-playing time to the benefit of the club, be it in organisation, transport or social ventures.

However, I believe the key to Wales’ success is the philosophy. DARE TO DREAM AND DON’T BE AFRAID TO FAIL. Four years ago Wales lost 1-6 to Serbia but they knuckled down, utilised their spirit and coaching expertise and with hard work lifted themselves to number 11 in the World rankings. I believe we have in place many of the required elements to become an even better club. What we need to focus on is our mental outlook. Always go on the table thinking you can win. Don’t let the fear of failure deter you from going for your shots, playing your top game. Go for it! There will be blips but use them to make you mentally tougher and hungrier. If we adopt such an outlook we will see our club’s reputation soar.
